Phenacetin (CAS No. 62-44-2) is an antipyretic and analgesic that was once widely used.

Phenacetin itself has no direct pharmacological activity; it is primarily metabolized by the liver into acetaminophen (i.e., paracetamol), through which it exerts its antipyretic and analgesic effects. Therefore, its pharmacological effects are similar to those of acetaminophen, and it is used to relieve fever, headaches, neuralgia, and joint pain. Historically, it was one of the key ingredients in cold remedies such as compound aspirin (APC tablets).
