Acetaminophen (also known as paracetamol) is a widely used antipyretic and analgesic medication.

It exerts its antipyretic and analgesic effects by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) in the central nervous system, thereby selectively suppressing prostaglandin synthesis in the hypothalamic thermoregulatory center. While it shows greater selectivity for inhibiting COX-2 than COX-1, it possesses virtually no anti-inflammatory activity.

Recommended by the World Health Organization as a first-line analgesic, it causes minimal gastrointestinal irritation and is generally considered safer than other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin.

Antipyretic and analgesic: Used to relieve fever caused by the common cold or influenza, as well as mild to moderate pain such as headache, toothache, muscle pain, neuralgia, and menstrual pain.
