Piracetam (development code: UCB 6215) is the first compound ever termed a "nootropic," originally marketed by UCB Pharma in 1971 . It is a cyclic derivative of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), although its mechanism of action differs from that of endogenous GABA . As the prototype of the racetam family, Piracetam remains one of the most widely used tool compounds in neuroscience research today.

In aged rats, Piracetam (300 mg/kg once daily) significantly increases membrane fluidity in multiple brain regions and improves active avoidance learning; it also increases NMDA receptor density in the hippocampus and muscarinic cholinergic receptor densities in the frontal cortex and striatum .
Neuroprotection and Synaptic Plasticity: Piracetam has neuroprotective and anticonvulsant properties and is reported to improve neural plasticity . In alcohol-withdrawn rats, Piracetam-treated animals showed up to 20% higher synapse numbers compared to non-treated animals, suggesting it may promote synaptic reorganization at the mossy fiber level .
Anti-Aβ Peptide Fusion Effect: In vitro studies demonstrate that Piracetam significantly decreases the fusogenic and destabilizing effect of Aβ 29-42 in a concentration-dependent manner. Preincubation of Piracetam with the peptide at a ratio of 960:1 almost completely protects fluorescent probes from Aβ peptide disruption .
Microcirculation Improvement: Piracetam affects the vascular system by reducing erythrocyte adhesion to the vascular endothelium, hindering vasospasms, and facilitating microcirculation
